Bruichladdich Black Art

Black Art

The first release in the now legendary Black Art series. Even we don’t know how Jim McEwan has conjured-up this bewitching dram – this is something he alone has crafted (in dead of night?) in the stygian darkness of Warehouse No. 12. A dark, sensuous spirit, very fine, incredibly elegant, decadently-hued, perplexingly complex, mishievously-prepared and subtly provocative. Beguiling, other-worldly, sublime, inspired.

“Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before…” – Edgar Allan Poe, The Raven

Black Art 06.1

A cryptic composition of casks, the legendary Bruichladdich Black Art reaches its sixth edition. This unpeated single malt has undergone a parallel journey with our head distiller, Adam. Having worked closely with these casks in his early days in the warehouses, under the guidance of then Master Distiller Jim McEwan, Adam has had the honour of learning and developing alongside this spirit. The substantial task of hand-selecting and blending our very best spirit now falls to him alone.

Black Art 07.1

Single malt whisky has the unique ability to capture and preserve a snapshot in time. This edition of our Black Art, 07.1, is symbolic of a moment in time that should not be forgotten. Signifying the end of an era, 1994 was the year Bruichladdich was closed for what could have been the last time.

Black Art 08.1

Decades have passed since this unpeated spirit ran from the stills in our ethereal, Victorian stillhouse. The stillmen who were present in 1994 would have no concept of its destiny; that it would eventually become the eighth iteration of the notorious Bruichladdich Black Art. This spirit would take many weaving journeys within our loch-side warehouses. Each cask it met has been identified and nurtured over time under the tenureship of our Head Distiller. All with one ultimate purpose in mind. Few responsibilities are as daunting as the composition of this cuvee. Lesser distillers would be unwilling to release their finest casks completely unaccounted for, totally in secret. And yet, those in the know of our alchemic release, are fully trusting in the hands of Adam. Over eight releases now, this unaccountability has been justified.

Black Art 09.1

In an era when efficiency was promoted over quality, our distillery was considered irredeemably old-fashioned. The single malt produced before our closure in 1994 now equates to less than 1% of all the ‘pre-renaissance’ whisky still maturing in our warehouses. Our oldest spirits have become some of our rarest and most treasured. Ensuring the eloquent work of our predecessors is given the closest attention, this finite 1992 vintage has been nurtured on its 29-year journey from cask to cask by our head distiller, Adam Hannett. Matured in unrivalled quality oak, this unpeated spirit’s recipe is held in absolute secret – as is customary with every Black Art edition before it. What we do know about our 9th edition is that our most alchemic single malt is the oldest ever. This is the quintessential Black Art: Edition 09.1.
