The Cairn Distillery

About a year ago, the Gordon & MacPhail company got the official “go” to build their planned whisky distillery in Craggan near Grantown-on-Spey: The plans, submitted in spring 2019, got the approval of the responsible Cairngorms National Park Authority and so the construction of the distillery with a visitor center, tasting rooms and coffee shop could start.

After several delays work finally began this year on the site, which offers a view of the impressive Cairngorm Mountains and now it’s time for the next milestone, says the family-run company Gordon & MacPhail. They proudly announced the name of the distillery and whisky brand: The Cairn.

“We have put the consumer right at the heart of the process of creating the brand, as we have with the design of the distillery itself. We wanted to make sure it was clearly Scottish, but easy for consumers to pronounce and to spell. This will be particularly important for our international markets when English is not the first language. We also had to be mindful of Benromach, our other distillery. We wanted the new brand to complement, not compete.”

Taste profile

The Logo:

In cooperation with a Glasgow agency, ideas from employees and shareholders were collected. More than 300 proposals were made, which led to a shortlist and ultimately to the favorite name “The Cairn”. It gives a clear hint of the geographical allocation of the distillery in the Cairngorms and can also be represented as a logo in the form of a stylized Cairn (a kind of stone pyramid).
