The Macallan Golden age of Travel Series

Adventure beckons in this exclusive selection of whiskies available to travellers in select airports around the world.

The Ocean Liner

A transportation back in time to the first decade of international travel, this first release in the series features a rich and enticing Macallan single malt that relives the days of luxury travel across the oceans.

RICH AND REFINED

The exceptionally rare Macallan whisky in this first decanter was distilled in 1937, first bottled in 1971 at 34 years old, and rebottled in 2015. Like the era it celebrates, it is a rich and warm single malt with a refined sense of style. Notes of sultanas, cocoa and mature wood reflect the rich elegance of the dark oak panels and mahogany staircases of the great ocean liners of the 1930s. With a freshness that belies its vintage, it is balanced and smooth with notes of light spice.

This individual Macallan is history in a glass that also speaks of a bygone time at the distillery. Distilled two years before the outbreak of the Second World War, the whisky reveals clues about the distillation and maturation of The Macallan at this time; when a steam railway ran past the foot of the hill below the estate, bringing in raw materials and taking away deliveries of finished casks.

The Aeroplane

A celebration of adventure, glamour and style, the halcyon days of commercial air travel opened up a whole new world of possibilities and are embodied in this rich and comforting whisky.

AN UPLIFTING ADVENTURE

With the introduction of the first commercial airlines, adventure awaited those ‘jet set’ few who boarded the almost magical, great silver flying machines – in anticipation of international destinations they had only ever dreamed of. An exotic experience heady with glamour, style and romance. While the lucky few took to the skies, high above the River Spey, the Macallan distillery in the 1930s still employed three horses for ‘general duties’. The early years of the decade were tough for all distillers, largely due to the Great Depression and Prohibition in the US. But whilst output was modest, the noted quality of The Macallan was maintained.

This second release in The Macallan Golden Age of Travel series conveys the decadence of air travel during the era and hints at heady exotic destinations yet to be explored. Distilled in 1937, first bottled in 1972, and rebottled in 2016, this 35 years old Macallan is kind and uplifting, just like the famed air stewards of the time.

The Steam Train

A time of glamour and romance, this rich and enticing release embraces the luxury carriages with stunning interiors that transported their passengers on magical journeys across spectacular landscapes.

LUXURY TRAVEL BY STEAM

Featuring an exceptionally rare Macallan, distilled in 1937, this scarce single malt vintage was first bottled in 1973, and rebottled in 2017. Deep russet red in colour, it is a rare and special Macallan that explodes with flavours of spice, toasted oak, Seville oranges and rose oil. The sensuous natural colour suggests a higher proportion of second fill Spanish sherry-seasoned oak casks were used, supported by American oak – a result of the shortage of casks during the years of the Spanish Civil War. Over the years this whisky has developed a unique character, defined by a vibrancy of flavours on the palate and a long smooth finish.

The inspiration for the handcrafted Lalique crystal decanter design comes from Lalique’s founder, Rene Lalique, who designed and made the ornate glass panels in the ‘wagon présidentiel’ on the infamous Orient Express.

The Motor car

An age of bold steps and innovation, when automobiles evolved into an expression of luxury and art.

A LUXURIOUS EXPERIENCE

During the 1930s the automobile business flourished and made strides that would set the tone of the industry for decades to come. Automobiles became a form of art, a way for owners to value elegance and innovation. Distilled in 1937 the whisky relives an age of bold steps and innovation, and creates its own art through complex and invigorating notes of polished antique wood on the nose, similar to the finishes of a luxurious 1930s motor car.

Each limited edition decanter in the series is encased within a beautiful premium leather presentation box created by leather masters Piñavall in Ubrique, Spain. Piñavallis are renowned for their work with some of the world’s leading fashion brands. In keeping with the Golden Age of Travel idea, the box consciously evokes design elements of classic 1930s travel trunks and luggage and for the motor car edition is racing green in colour, to reflect the automobile theme.

Amber sunset in colour, with a velvet sweetness and delights of sweet oak vanilla pods, this exquisite whisky is balanced with a distinct, yet supremely delicate peat smoke. The unexpected, but welcome peat element retreats to reveal a lingering smoothness on the palate. Flavours of peach, dried apricots and orange with hints of dark chocolate come to life in a gentle build, leaving a lasting impression on the palate.

The finish is intricate, yet incredibly smooth with a long, velvet-like combination of the sweet scents of peach and zesty berries, with a subtle edge of peat. This whisky highlights the commitment to selecting the finest quality spirit from our stills – the finest cut that helps create the signature viscous mouth-feel and fruity flavour synonymous with The Macallan.

THE CULMINATION OF A STUNNING SERIES

Calling back to an elegant period in time where the world opened up to new adventures, this fifth and final release from the exquisite Golden Age of Travel series brings our exploration of this fascinating period of history to a close.

A collaboration with French crystal makers Lalique, contained within this exquisite vessel is The Macallan 1940 (35 Years Old) that distils the essence of bygone eras, a time of great change and the seemingly endless opportunities through international travel. The liquid is beautifully showcased in a handcrafted Lalique crystal decanter, and features an illustration of one of the most innovative developments of the era in the first civil air transportation machine. This era allowed the discovery of new and exotic places made possible through luxury travel.
